One of the highlights of this auction is the Rock Island collection of Mike Mottler, recently retired.

The first miniature homes were not intended to be playthings for young hands or imaginations: Wealthy matrons owned them as trophy collections, with one Dutch creation of the late s boasting bucolic murals and mantelpieces groaning with fingernail-sized chinaware. Artist Sam McKechnie has been fascinated by doll houses like this one since childhood Credit: Andrew Crowley Household management was taught to serving girls and maids with these ornate illustrations of domestic life above and below stairs.

A shelf, shoebox, or even a shoe itself can become the setting for a bedroom or kitchen, she tells me — this is The Borrowers made real. Amy and Sam McKechnie create a miniature meal Credit: McKechnie shows me how to roll out small pieces of Fimo modelling clay and mould them into a feast — clusters of small balls for peas or beans, oblongs for chips and sausages, and discs for cherry tarts.

Once baked hard, the shapes are coloured with water-based acrylic paints and secured to a plate with glue, complete with a smear of red paint to represent ketchup.

Catalogue numbers have often thought to be a date code, but I don’t think this is the case because of the description I will give below. Most commercial toy or model companies have invested large sums of money in developing their various product lines and have to recoup that investment with high sales figures. If you look in the ‘Great book of Corgi’ it contains a lot of production figures for their models and the actual sales figures for a particular model for each model in the range.

These sales figures have been generated from shop sales receipts being fed back to Corgi and a member of staff in the sales department at Corgi, tie those sales figures to the relevant models by their catalogue number which are actually a sales number.

Thousands of years ago, Egyptian children played with dolls that had wigs and movable limbs which were made from stone, pottery, and wood. When Greek children, especially girls, came of age it was customary for them to sacrifice the toys of their childhood to the gods. On the eve of their wedding, young girls around fourteen would offer their dolls in a temple as a rite of passage into adulthood.

The game consisted of a square divided into 14 parts, and the aim was to create different shapes from these pieces. In Iran “puzzle-locks” were made as early as the 17th century AD. Enlightenment era Toys became more widespread with the changing attitudes towards children engendered by the Enlightenment. Children began to be seen as people in and of themselves, as opposed to extensions of their household and that they had a right to flourish and enjoy their childhood.

The variety and number of toys that were manufactured during the 18th century steadily rose; John Spilsbury invented the first jigsaw puzzle in to help children learn geography. The rocking horse on bow rockers was developed at the same time in England, especially with the wealthy as it was thought to develop children’s balance for riding real horses.

He asked if I had a jacket with me. He told me he would be there in 5 minutes and to be outside waiting for him. As soon as he pulled up, I jumped in and asked what was happening. He told me to just wait and see. Under two large tents were tables full of Hot Wheels! I spotted a large auction poster that claimed there were 20, cars. We quickly pulled into a parking spot, jumped out, and immediately signed up to bid!

After making our way to the tent, it started to sink in just what we were looking at. This was the single largest collection of Hot Wheels either of us had ever seen. There were half that many cars, but 10k is still a lot of Hot Wheels! A couple people showed interest in the Hot Wheels, but most people were focused on the roofing equipment and work trucks.

Could we actually buy this entire collection of Hot Wheels? And what the heck would we do with them all? Once we found the auctioneer, he explained that they would open bidding for specific items, then for the tubs full of cars and then finally for each table.

The case of the captured mini-UFO 30 Jul Japan has had its fair share of UFO sightings over the years, but few encounters have been as peculiar as the one involving the mini-UFO captured in Kochi prefecture in On the afternoon of August 25, , a year-old junior high student named Michio Seo sighted a strange object flying above a rice field while walking home from school. From a distance he watched the small, mysterious object zigzag quickly around the field like a bat chasing insects.

Later that day, Michio told his friends about the curious flying object. About an hour later, they spotted the object flying over the rice field, lighting up the night with a pulsating silver light.

Early history[ edit ] Rover 90 and Riley Pathfinder Mettoy became established in Northampton and within six years of the company’s founding, the Northampton factory had employees. This provided many new jobs in an area of high unemployment following the scaling down of local coal mining operations. However, in the early s, they began producing a few products in cast metal. The first was a large scale wind-up racer made with a cast aluminum body and tin plate wheels.

The body material was soon changed to die cast zinc and it was refitted with cast wheels and moulded rubber tyres. Other models followed and the product line was given the name “Castoys. The name was short and easy to remember, further aligning the range with their rival Dinky Toys. Corgi Toys also included plastic glazing, [3] which lent the models a greater authenticity, and they carried the advertising slogan “the ones with windows”.

The releases were all familiar British vehicles. Initially, all models were issued in free-rolling form, or with friction drive motors, with the exception of the heavy commercials which would have been too bulky and the sports cars whose low slung bodies would not be able to accommodate the motors. The Mechanical versions, as they were known, were indicated by an ‘M’ suffix to the model number and were available in different colour schemes.

They were issued with tougher die-cast bases to support the extra weight of the motor, and in far fewer numbers. Mechanical versions did not sell particularly well, partly due to a significantly higher purchase price, and were phased out in with Ford Thunderbird M the last of the line. Gradually the models became more sophisticated with the addition of such features as ‘Glidamatic’ spring suspension and a detailed interior on the Renault Floride in October , and the fibre-optic style ‘Trans-o-Lite’ illuminating lights system first seen on the Superior Ambulance on Cadillac Chassis in October

A History of Tin Toys. The one area of yesterdays toys that I never get tired of delving into is that of tinplate toys. There again it is such a vast area for the collector, both serious and not quite so, to choose from …. Because it is such a large topic to cover in one go it is an area which I will be returning to time and time again under various headings. Prior to WW1 the early tin toys were often painstakingly hand painted — the advent of chromolithography was to change all that.

The technique allowed multi-coloured illustrations to be printed on to flat sheets of tinplate which could then be stamped out and put together by means of bendable tabs to form the finished toy. By the early part of the 20th century Germany was the leading producer of tin toys in the world a position which it maintained right up to the outbreak of WW So much so that when peace eventually returned toy makers everywhere had a great deal of lost ground to make up.

But this new dawn also saw the emergence of a new market leader in the shape of Japan. Not just wind-up and friction drive motors but Japanese tin plate toys were also incorporating battery power not simply to drive the toy but also to provide lights and sounds. But the market never stands still and despite this relative boom in the post war era, tin toy manufacturing was facing its biggest threat yet ……..

John Kinchen, from Portsmouth, collected the vehicles for decades before his death last year, with models dating from to the early s. Auctioneer Piers Motley said the collection had been “well known amongst the Dinky world for decades”. As a child Mr Kinchen was bought a couple of pre-war dinkies as a child, which sparked his enthusiasm for the miniature vehicles, Mr Motley said. Toy expert Bob Leggett said collectors were “very much a grey-haired audience” who were willing to spend a lot of money “to recreate their youth”.

He said part of the “thrill” for collectors came from chasing the more elusive models they did not have during their childhoods. Image copyright Piers Motley Image caption This Foden flat truck became a unique item after manufacturers forgot to paint a silver flash on one side Image copyright Piers Motley Image caption A rare boxed Weetabix van was among the collection “The golden era of Dinky Toys was probably the s to the s and there’s a lot of people who are retiring in their late 60s who are still collecting, and they have disposable income, they’re the baby-boom generation”, Mr Leggett said.

He said Dinky toys, which were manufactured from the s to the s, largely had the model vehicle market to themselves until the s, and therefore had a “slightly larger collecting fraternity” today than later rival brands such as Corgi Toys.
